Andrej Karpathy and the Post-App Era with Dobby
Andrej Karpathy, a prominent figure in vibe coding, is exploring a future without applications. In a recent appearance on the "No Priors" podcast, he shared his experience with an innovative AI agent named OpenClaw, which has transformed the way he interacts with smart home technologies.
Dobby, the Digital Elf
Karpathy developed an AI agent he named "Dobby," in homage to the house-elf from the Harry Potter saga. This system was designed to scan his local network, identify connected devices, locate undocumented APIs, reverse-engineer, and control these systems through natural language. With Dobby, Karpathy was able to eliminate the multitude of applications needed to manage his home, such as those for Sonos or lighting.
A Radical Simplification
Dobby allowed Karpathy to centralize control of his devices, rendering obsolete the six applications he previously used for home automation. "I no longer need these apps," he stated, emphasizing the simplicity and efficiency of the AI agent. Dobby began executing commands such as playing music and controlling lights, demonstrating its ability to replace traditional interfaces.
However, setting up Dobby still requires technical skills. Karpathy also expressed his frustration with the complexity of applications, particularly with Sonos speakers, which he found difficult to use.
A Challenge for the App Ecosystem
This technological advancement highlights the disruptive potential of AI agents for the app economy. By facilitating interaction with devices through voice and natural language, these agents could transform the way we use technology, challenging the traditional model of touchscreen-based interfaces. Generative AI and agents pose a threat to the app ecosystem and the companies that depend on it.
