The Berlin-based Restate secures $20 million to strengthen its execution sustainability infrastructure. Driven by the rise of AI agents, the startup claims references like Replit and aims to compete with Temporal, recently valued at $12.55 billion.
Temporal boasts a $12.55 billion valuation after raising $550 million
Temporal, founded in 2019, announced earlier this month a Series E funding round of $550 million, accompanied by a valuation of $12.55 billion. This new capital is intended to allow Restate to position itself against this major player in workflow sustainability infrastructure.
Restate opts for its own storage and replication layers
Restate has chosen not to rely on an external database for its execution engine, preferring to develop its own storage, replication, and redundancy layers. According to Stephen Ewen, this architecture makes the platform very fast and lightweight. He notes that while many companies reserve sustainability engines for so-called heavy workflows, Restate seeks to broaden these uses with a system presented as more efficient and cost-effective. Ewen states that the common demand from clients is for automatic recovery capabilities if a process fails during execution, a requirement heightened by the length and unpredictability of agent workflows, which necessitate precise tracking to ensure consistent results.
Commercial traction: six and seven-figure contracts and Replit
Stephen Ewen reports that the rise of AI agents has given a significant boost to the company. In recent months, Restate has secured several six and seven-figure contracts. He also claims to have attracted well-known clients, including the coding platform Replit, and serves Fortune 500 groups, particularly in finance.
$20 million in Series A and roadmap, with an Apache Flink pedigree
Restate raised $20 million in Series A, led by Singular, with participation from Redpoint Ventures and Capital One Ventures. The company plans to build a go-to-market team, recruit engineers, and expand its office in the San Francisco Bay Area to be closer to many current and potential clients. Co-founded in 2022 in Berlin by Stephen Ewen, along with Igal Shilman and Till Rohrmann, the startup leverages Ewen's experience as a co-creator of Apache Flink and former CTO of Data Artisans, which was acquired by Alibaba in 2019 and renamed Ververica, where he served as CTO for three years. Ewen explains that the technology, originally designed for multi-step workflow sustainability, has proven suitable for the challenges posed by agents. He believes these capabilities will soon become essential beyond traditional tech and that within a few years, the tool could be useful to nearly all businesses, much like a database.
