Roland Launches Melody Flip, a MIDI Loop Generator

Roland is entering the world of generative music with Melody Flip, a plugin designed as an idea starter rather than a factory for finished tracks. Integrated into the DAW, it generates loops and MIDI tracks from around 250 Palettes categorized by genre. The tool does not produce vocals or complete arrangements, focusing instead on user editing.
A Tepid Reception and a Recent Product Shift
Melody Flip arrives at a time when generative AI is met with skepticism by the music community, and it is suggested that the tool is unlikely to garner much support. Roland is emerging from a period marked by criticism of its subscription service Roland Cloud, which has been deemed disorganized, and a strained relationship with part of its customer base. However, the brand has been recognized for recently correcting its course, particularly with the P-6 Creative Sampler, SH-4d, and Gaia 2 models, which addressed major issues in its lineup. Last year, Roland also highlighted its analog heritage with the TR-1000, after taking user feedback into account.

No Complete Songs: Loops, Minimal Adjustments
Unlike Suno or Udio, Melody Flip does not generate vocals or complete arrangements. The plugin offers simple musical loops, designed as starting points for creation, and presents itself as a creative catalyst rather than a tool for producing finished tracks. The controls are limited: users cannot provide a detailed text prompt; they only select a genre, note density, tempo, and key, then receive a result to refine.
Palettes, Genres, and MIDI: A Plugin for Working in the DAW
With Melody Flip, Roland is taking its first steps into music generation through a plugin intended for digital audio workstations. Nearly 250 Palettes are available, each corresponding to a thematic set of musical ideas organized by style. Users can generate different combinations of melody, chord progressions, bass lines, or drums, or provide a reference track to inspire melodic generation. The catalog covers a variety of styles, from "80s Disco" to "Kawaii Future Bass" or "Anime World." The provided sounds are primarily generic MIDI presets, reminiscent of 90s video game music, indicating that the outputs are not meant to be used as-is. The expected use is to export the MIDI data into the DAW for further refinement and to combine it with other synthesizer plugins.
