Runway: From Model Creation to Generative Media Infrastructure

Runway, a well-known startup in the field of artificial intelligence, is no longer just focused on developing AI models. It now aims to become an essential infrastructure for generative media. This ambition was realized with the launch of the Runway Media Router, an innovative tool designed to transform how developers interact with AI models.

Last Thursday, Runway launched the Media Router via Runway Dev, its developer-focused platform that was introduced earlier this month. This platform provides API access to a growing variety of image, video, and audio models, including those developed by Runway itself. The launch of the Media Router was shared exclusively with TechCrunch, highlighting the strategic importance of this announcement.

An Automatic Selection Tool for Developers

The Media Router stands out for its ability to automatically select the most suitable generation model for a specific request, whether it be for image, video, or audio. This selection is based on the priorities defined by the developer, such as quality, speed, or cost. While model routers are common in the realm of large language models, Runway claims that its Media Router is the first specifically designed for generative media.

Anthony Maggio, product director at Runway, explained to TechCrunch that model routing fulfills the promise of simplifying the integration of generative media models for developers. This approach aims to make the use of these models as seamless as possible.

A Key Step for Runway

The launch of this router marks a new phase in Runway's evolution. Initially focused on AI video, the startup is now positioning itself as an infrastructure for companies developing generative media. With Runway Dev, companies such as Adobe, Cloudflare, ElevenLabs, Expedia, Shutterstock, and Quora can directly integrate media generation into their products via the Runway API, without redirecting their users to Runway's application or website.

A Growing Market

The launch of the Media Router comes at a time when the number of generative media models is rapidly increasing. This proliferation makes evaluating new versions increasingly complex and time-consuming for developers. The Runway Dev platform allows developers to access the latest models as soon as they are released, thereby simplifying this process.

Anthony Maggio emphasized that most developers do not have the time to deeply understand the capabilities of each model and their differences in terms of video, image, and audio outputs. Runway's unique proposition lies in the intelligence it brings to identify the best model for each use case, taking into account the specific preferences of each company.

Developer Preferences and Concerns

Maggio also noted that Chinese generative media models are gaining popularity. However, some companies may hesitate to use these models due to concerns about their origin. This reluctance could intensify as political measures, such as those considered by the Trump administration, may restrict the use of open Chinese AI models.

Developers can set various preferences, including regarding token pricing and quality. Token prices have become a hot topic in 2026, with companies investing heavily in agentic AI and feeling the impact of high bills. In the world of large language models, routing based on token prices is common, and it makes sense for this practice to extend to generative media.

Quality and Expertise of Runway

When it comes to quality, determining which models offer the best performance for a given task is more complex for generative media than for language models. This is where the intelligence of the Media Router comes into play. It relies on the expertise of Runway's internal creative team, which has developed methods to evaluate the outputs of each type of media, whether it involves motion management in videos, composition in images, or lip-syncing in voice models.

Runway had already undertaken much of this work for its agent product, a conversational AI creative partner launched in May, which helps transform text prompts into fully edited multi-shot videos and marketing campaigns.

Advanced Routing Technology

According to Maggio, the Runway Media Router uses the same routing technology developed for Runway's internal products, but it is now accessible to external developers.

Runway's current strategy reflects the fragmentation and competitiveness of the generative media landscape. The startup must adapt and pivot to remain competitive. The latest version of its AI video model, Gen 4.5, launched in December, has topped the rankings, surpassing similar models from established players like Google.

The launch of the Media Router also comes just weeks after Runway replaced its unlimited subscription plans with token-based pricing, a decision that has drawn criticism from some users.

A Race for Innovation

Since then, Runway has not launched a new dedicated video model, although it updated its video editing model, Aleph 2.0, in May. Today, while Aleph 2.0 is among the top-performing video editing models according to Artificial Analysis, Runway's text-to-video and image-to-video models no longer dominate the rankings, where models from major players such as Google and Chinese companies ByteDance and Alibaba are featured.

Rather than betting on a single model to stay ahead, Runway's Media Router operates on the premise that the best model will continue to evolve. This allows Runway to remain in the race for innovation, whether as a developer of the best new AI model or as the best orchestration layer.

A Future-Oriented Vision

Anastasis Germanidis, co-founder and co-CEO of Runway, acknowledged that the startup has long been primarily known for its end-user aspect. However, it has had to build a complete stack to achieve this, including a platform for developers, a suite of creative tools, and an inference layer.

Germanidis emphasized the growing interest from companies for Runway to be present in every part of this stack. "You need good models underneath, but orchestration matters more and more," he told TechCrunch. "This is something we have had to build increasingly — this layer of intelligence that comes above pure pixel models. The router is a way for the benefits of that to reach users."

Anthony Maggio added that since 2018, Runway has focused on research while building for the future of the generative media field.
