Sakana claims that its AI model, Fugu Ultra v1.1, now surpasses Fable 5 without even including it in the selection pool.
Sakana AI has launched the Fugu Ultra v1.1, an update to its AI router that distributes each request among a pool of leading publicly available models. The company claims performance gains of up to 7.9 points compared to version v1.0, with the most significant improvements observed on ProgramBench and TerminalBench 2.1. The Fugu v1.1 is said to be capable of outperforming Fable 5, even though the latter is not part of the router's selection. All these figures come from Sakana itself, and no independent verification exists yet.
Pricing remains set at $5 per million input tokens and $30 per million output tokens. Sakana indicates that it takes about two weeks of training and evaluation before a new leading model is added to the pool. The architecture is detailed in the technical report. The update also adds an endpoint compatible with Claude Code to call Fugu directly from the terminal. Since its launch, Fugu has been available on platforms like OpenRouter and Vercel.
The first version of Fugu received mixed reviews. Critics pointed out high token usage, slowness, and disappointing results. Sakana still does not serve the EU or EEA, citing GDPR and "EU-specific regulations."
