Round One: Sam Altman vs. Elon Musk

Elon Musk wasted no time attacking Sam Altman. Last Friday, Apple filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, accusing the company of stealing trade secrets to develop its next hardware device. Musk reacted to this news with exclamations and the word "wow," expressing his skepticism about the situation. On Saturday, he intensified his criticisms by labeling Altman as "Scam Altman," a pun he seems to enjoy. Throughout the day, Musk continued to accuse Altman of taking scamming to a new level, insinuating that he might enjoy deceiving "more than anyone alive." In response, Altman replied in his characteristic style, using lowercase letters and deliberately incorrect spelling to emphasize his disdain: "homeboy, you're the one selling public market investors on short-term space data centers." Three minutes later, Altman seized the opportunity to promote his product, claiming that the success of GPT-5.6 Sol was measured by Musk's obsession with it. Musk, for his part, responded by stating that space data centers would start flying next year, inviting Altman to come see them if his "probation officer" allowed, a jab referencing their tumultuous breakup nearly a decade ago. Musk also accused Altman of stealing "all the technology from Apple phones," adding another layer to their disputes. OpenAI contests Apple's allegations, asserting that there is no evidence supporting these claims. After Saturday's confrontation, Altman continued to criticize Musk by reposting concerns about data privacy from SpaceXAI. Despite these tensions, both Musk and Altman expressed their support for an AI safety trial published by Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind.

Round Two: Sam Altman vs. Anthropic

Alongside his exchanges with Musk, Sam Altman has also directed his criticisms at Anthropic, his main competitor. Last Thursday, Anthropic released an advertisement that sparked reactions, posing questions such as: what will humans do when AI takes all the jobs? The main image of this advertisement depicted a house on fire, symbolizing a pessimistic vision of the future of AI. Altman mocked this advertisement, claiming he thought it was satire published by a fake account. He also insinuated that Anthropic judged who was worthy of accessing certain features, referencing how the company had modified certain prompts from Fable 5 at its launch. Anthropic has since adjusted these protections. Earlier, Altman laughed at a X user who criticized the relationship between users and Fable 5. Altman also shared a quote from C.S. Lewis, criticizing what he perceives as tyranny exercised for the sake of victims. This critique aligns with those of other AI leaders, who accuse Anthropic of warning about the risks of AI while claiming that only their technology can solve them. Finally, Altman posted a vague message: "Come for the best model, stay because we don't treat you with contempt," without specifying which competitor he was targeting. Dario Amodei, for his part, seems to be avoiding conflict, having not responded to Altman's provocations or updated his X account in over a month.
