Sam Altman Links Attack on His Home to Alarmist Discourse

Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, recently spoke out about an attack that occurred at his San Francisco home. He highlighted the potential role of "doomism" related to artificial intelligence, as well as other discourse, as factors that may have contributed to the incident. Altman mentioned that the way some labs talk about OpenAI does not help.

In an interview with Ashlee Vance for the "Core Memory" podcast, Altman detailed his concerns. He stated that alarmist rhetoric, which he refers to as "doomism," has not helped ease tensions. According to him, certain statements from other labs, including Anthropic, may have exacerbated the situation.

It is unclear which specific remarks from Anthropic Altman was referring to. After the attack, he published a blog post mentioning "the Shakespearean drama between the companies in our field," without directly naming Anthropic or other AI players. Altman also suggested that a recent article from the New Yorker may have increased risks to his personal safety.

A Targeted Attack and Serious Accusations

Authorities revealed that Daniel Moreno-Gama traveled from Texas to California with the intent to kill Altman. Before his arrest outside OpenAI's headquarters on the morning of April 10, Moreno-Gama threw a Molotov cocktail at Altman's $27 million home. He faces state and federal charges, including attempted murder. The FBI found an "anti-AI" document on him containing other names of AI CEOs, underscoring the seriousness of his intentions.

Following the attack, Altman told Vance that he initially felt "an adrenaline shock" before sinking into despair. "I thought, you know, there are going to be more things like this, and that's incredibly discouraging," he shared. He added that he went through a real depressive cycle about it, emphasizing how frightening the experience was for him.

Heightened Rivalry Between OpenAI and Anthropic

The rivalry between OpenAI and Anthropic, a company founded by former OpenAI employees, has intensified in recent months. These former collaborators left OpenAI due to disagreements over safety priorities. Anthropic did not respond to Business Insider's requests for comments regarding these tensions.

In December, Dario Amodei, the CEO of Anthropic, criticized companies that declared "red alerts," which was perceived as an attack on OpenAI. Anthropic also launched an advertising campaign mocking announcements in AI chatbots, coinciding with OpenAI's plans to integrate ads into ChatGPT. During a conference in India, Altman and Amodei refused to shake hands, illustrating the depth of their disagreement.

In February, Altman criticized the Trump administration for blacklisting Anthropic, while OpenAI signed a deal with the Pentagon, which Altman later deemed hasty. An internal memo from Amodei, revealed by The Information, accused Altman of undermining Anthropic's position while publicly claiming to support it.

Altman's Concerns About Anthropic's Strategy

During his conversation with Vance, Altman was asked about Anthropic's decision not to launch Claude Mythos, a controversial AI model. Anthropic justified this decision by citing fears that the model could facilitate hacking. Altman criticized this approach, calling it "fear-based marketing."

He sarcastically compared Anthropic's strategy to selling bomb shelters after claiming to have built a bomb. This metaphor underscores his disapproval of what he perceives as the exploitation of AI-related fears for commercial gain.

Altman concluded by expressing his hope that the debate around AI becomes more serene. He hopes that more rational and less alarmist discussions will prevail in the future.
