Samsung Expands AI Access for Employees

Samsung Electronics has recently decided to broaden its employees' access to advanced artificial intelligence tools, including ChatGPT Enterprise and Codex. This initiative aims to enable a wider use of these technologies across various functions, both technical and non-technical. According to OpenAI, this expansion affects all employees of Samsung Electronics in South Korea, as well as those in the Device eXperience division internationally. This division is responsible for smartphones, consumer electronics, and home appliances.

Samsung's goal is to integrate these tools into several aspects of its operations, ranging from software development to marketing, manufacturing, and product development. The specific tasks that these AI tools are expected to facilitate include information retrieval, document writing, idea generation, data interpretation, and coding-related work.

A Shift After Strict Restrictions

This opening to AI comes after Samsung imposed restrictions on the use of generative AI tools by its employees three years ago due to concerns about data security. In 2023, the company limited the use of ChatGPT and other similar tools amid fears that sensitive internal information could be uploaded to external platforms.

With the new rollout, Samsung now provides its employees access to ChatGPT Enterprise, a version that includes enhanced controls for data protection, user management, and security. OpenAI has emphasized that this version allows organizations to manage users, enforce access controls, and utilize AI tools while complying with internal security requirements.

Previous restrictions pertained to the use of ChatGPT and similar generative AI tools. Now, employees have access to these tools through an enterprise product equipped with data protections and access controls. Samsung has not limited this rollout to a single business unit or specific technical group, allowing for extensive use across various functions.

Codex: Serving Technical and Non-Technical Teams

Codex, another tool from OpenAI, will be used for technical tasks such as writing, reviewing, and debugging code. OpenAI has also mentioned that this tool is employed to develop internal tools, websites, software prototypes, and automated workflows.

Codex is not only intended for technical teams. It can also support non-technical teams in their daily tasks, helping to create internal tools and automated workflows, for example. OpenAI reported that Codex now has over five million weekly users, spanning both technical and non-technical workflows. In South Korea, the number of weekly active users of Codex has seen a dramatic increase of nearly 800% since February 1, 2026.

Harrison Kim, General Manager of OpenAI Korea, described this agreement as one of the largest enterprise rollouts by OpenAI. He emphasized that Samsung is utilizing AI across different teams and functions, without limiting it to specific departments.

Strategic Partnerships Between Samsung and OpenAI

In October 2025, Samsung announced a strategic partnership with OpenAI as part of the Stargate AI infrastructure initiative. This partnership includes a request for OpenAI memory that could reach up to 900,000 DRAM wafers per month.

Samsung SDS, a subsidiary of Samsung, has also engaged in a potential partnership with OpenAI to jointly develop AI data centers and provide enterprise AI services. This agreement allows Samsung SDS to offer consulting, deployment, and management services for companies integrating OpenAI models into their internal systems.

Samsung SDS has signed a resale partnership to offer OpenAI services in South Korea. Under this arrangement, Samsung SDS will support Korean companies adopting ChatGPT Enterprise and other OpenAI services.

Reuters reported that Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix had signed letters of intent to supply memory chips for OpenAI's Stargate project. Together, these two South Korean chip manufacturers represent about 70% of the global DRAM market and nearly 80% of the broadband memory market.

Broadband memory is essential for fast data transfer between memory and processors in AI systems. According to the South Korean presidential office, the demand for OpenAI chips for Stargate could reach 900,000 wafers per month.

Samsung stated that its semiconductor operations would support OpenAI's demand with advanced memory solutions. The company also mentioned that its subsidiaries are exploring broader collaborations with OpenAI in areas such as data centers, enterprise services, and AI infrastructure.

The Impact of AI on Productivity

Deloitte's State of AI in the Enterprise 2026 report revealed that 66% of organizations have seen productivity or efficiency gains from adopting enterprise AI. The same report indicated that 53% of companies have observed improvements in insights and decision-making.

A survey by Bpifrance, reported by Reuters, found that 77% of executives from 534 mid-sized French companies stated that their businesses were using generative AI. However, only 17% of those using it reported time savings.

Samsung has identified use cases for AI in document work, information analysis, programming, product development, marketing, and manufacturing. The current rollout gives employees access to ChatGPT Enterprise and Codex for these tasks as part of an enterprise-wide agreement.

OpenAI Strengthens Its Presence in Korea

OpenAI has also announced other partnerships in Korea. Seoul National University has recently begun providing ChatGPT Edu to 47,000 students, teachers, and staff members.

OpenAI has collaborated with Kakao to integrate ChatGPT responses into KakaoTalk group chats. The company indicated that Korean organizations such as LG Electronics, LG Uplus, LG CNS, GS E&C, Samsung SDS, TVING, Krafton, Toss, MUSINSA, Korea Zinc, Nexen Tire, and HanaTour are using ChatGPT Enterprise, OpenAI APIs, or Codex.
