Sandstone Raises $30 Million to Integrate AI into In-House Legal Services

In a rapidly evolving sector, Sandstone has announced a $30 million Series A funding round aimed at transforming in-house legal teams through artificial intelligence. This funding, announced on Tuesday, is led by Lightspeed Venture Partners and supported by notable investors such as Sequoia, Mantis VC, and SV Angel.

This funding round comes just six months after a $10 million seed round led by Sequoia in January. Sandstone's goal is to address the specific needs of legal departments in small and medium-sized enterprises, a segment often overlooked by existing AI solutions.

A Needs-Centric Approach

Unlike other legal tools like Harvey and Legora, which focus on private practice, Sandstone is oriented towards managing internal tasks. According to Jarryd Strydom, co-founder and Chief Operating Officer, Sandstone's AI helps teams sort and organize work received through various channels such as Slack, emails, or Jira. The platform then allows for the creation of customized workflows for tasks such as drafting, reviewing, or legal analysis.

A Rapidly Evolving Market

Sandstone stands out with its specialized approach, aiming to optimize internal workflows rather than offering generalized solutions. This strategy could provide significant added value where other solutions fall short. Lightspeed Venture Partners shares this vision, firmly believing in a highly specialized vertical AI that understands the nuances of internal legal workflows.

Growing Competition

However, Sandstone will face intense competition. Leading AI labs, such as Anthropic, are also expanding their offerings in the legal sector. In May, Anthropic enhanced its Claude for Legal product with new tools for case law research and deposition preparation.

By focusing on in-house legal services, Sandstone hopes to differentiate itself and deliver innovative solutions to a market segment that remains largely underutilized.
