A Shock to Stimulate AI Adoption
Mark Barrocas, the CEO of SharkNinja, recently expressed his concerns about the uneven adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) among his employees. Noticing that some staff members were hesitant to embrace this technology, he decided to take a radical step: interrupting the company's usual activities to organize a four-day hackathon. This initiative, aimed at "shocking the system," sought to encourage broader and faster adoption of AI.
The event took place at SharkNinja's headquarters, known for its innovative products like the Ninja Creami and the Shark ChillPill. Dubbed "Jailbreak," this hackathon brought together teams of 10 to 15 people, tasked with working on around twenty major projects. Barrocas emphasized that AI represents a "great equalizer," allowing every employee, whether a student or a senior executive, to contribute meaningfully.
Encouraging Collaboration and Innovation
The hackathon served as a platform to foster collaboration among the various departments of the company. Employees who had never worked together before joined forces. Additionally, university students from the Boston area were invited to participate in a parallel event, providing them with the opportunity to develop their skills while helping SharkNinja scout for future talent.
The main goal was to explore how AI could be practically integrated into the company's operations, particularly in product development, marketing, and supply chain management. For instance, one team developed tools to extract customer feedback on a global scale, including from social media. Another team used AI to generate new product ideas, connect them to the cloud, and create applications with recipes.
One employee noted that tasks that once took months could now be accomplished in just a few days thanks to AI.
Cultivating a Culture of Innovation
The event also brought together product developers and marketing specialists to focus on the factors that make products go viral. Barrocas observed that employees were not waiting for corporate directives to use AI. Instead, they took the initiative to solve problems on their own.
"We already have this culture here — what we call 'finding problems, solving problems,'" he stated. The difference today lies in the fact that employees have a new set of tools to achieve this.
A Festive Atmosphere and Financial Incentives
The atmosphere during the hackathon was decidedly festive, with balloons and fun activities like mini-golf. SharkNinja announced its intention to distribute $1 million in prizes in 2026 to reward innovative AI ideas. Furthermore, several employees have already received $20,000 bonuses for their outstanding contributions.
Barrocas stressed that he does not want AI expertise to be limited to a few enthusiasts, but rather for thousands of employees to experiment with this technology to enhance their work. "We are not a tech company; we are a problem-solving company," he concluded.
