I recently opened the doors of my New York apartment to a team from the startup Shift. Their mission? To clean and cook for free while recording every movement to feed their AI and robotics algorithms. At first, the idea of seeing wires hanging from under their baseball caps made me nervous, but I quickly got used to it.

As a 23-year-old journalist living in New York, I can't afford to spend on cleaning services. So when Shift offered to clean my apartment at no cost, provided I accepted the presence of cameras, I jumped at the opportunity. I made sure to hide my personal belongings before their arrival, aware of the privacy implications.

An Innovative Yet Intrusive Service

Shift, a rapidly growing startup, offers free cleaning services in New York. In exchange, they record videos that are used to train robots for household tasks. According to their website, they guarantee the anonymization of personal data such as names and faces. This approach is part of a trend where companies collect videos of household tasks to improve the efficiency of robots.

As soon as Shift launched in May, I rushed to book a session. Two weeks later, the cleaners arrived, accompanied by a surprise: a chef had joined the team. This last-minute announcement heightened my initial apprehension, as I was unaware that Shift offered a chef service before James's arrival.

A Culinary Service That Expands

Shift is not limited to cleaning. Their culinary service, now available in San Francisco, offers sophisticated meals like filet mignon and lobsters for special occasions. This offering has already attracted interest from over 400 people, according to online feedback.

Once the work began, my fears dissipated. After all, the service was free.

The Arrival of the Cleaners

When the Shift cleaners crossed the threshold of my apartment, I felt a bit hesitant. These young adults, dressed in white polos and baseball caps equipped with cameras, quickly began their task. Although the cameras were discreet, the wires hanging from them were quite visible.

They used a mix of their own cleaning products and mine, taking about 90 minutes out of the two hours scheduled. During this time, I worked, and they respected my space, which I appreciated.

The cleaning result was not spectacular. My roommate, upon returning, even questioned the effectiveness of their work. However, the absence of fees more than compensated for this lack of perfection.

A Culinary Surprise

Shortly after the cleaners arrived, a knock at the door announced the arrival of chef James. He too wore the same uniform, with a camera discreetly attached to his cap. Ten minutes before my scheduled appointment, Shift had sent me a message informing me of this additional chef's arrival.

James took his place in my kitchen, asking about my food preferences. To my surprise, he was there to prepare a three-course meal. Although he brought his own ingredients, he used my utensils.

The main dish, a seared tuna accompanied by coriander salt, Meyer lemon, artichokes, sugar snap peas, and asparagus, was my favorite. The appetizer, a marinated salmon belly, was less convincing due to the dominant mustard oil. I saved the dessert, a light cake with whipped cream and strawberries, for later.

The culinary service was the highlight of the experience with Shift. With nothing sensitive in my kitchen, I had no privacy concerns. And who would refuse a good free meal?

Reflections on the Experience

After about 30 minutes, I got used to the presence of cameras and baseball caps in my personal space.

I wonder about the viability of these free services for training robots. The costs for Shift must be high, considering the salaries of the three employees, cleaning supplies, and meal ingredients. I doubt the value of the recorded videos offsets these expenses.

However, the demand is very real. Shift's slots fill up quickly, and a week after my session, they were already fully booked. I understand this enthusiasm.

After their departure, I enjoyed my partially cleaned apartment and the leftovers from the meal. I just hope my personal data hasn't been compromised by the AI machines seeking domestic learning.
