Apple Refuses to Turn Siri into a Charming AI Companion

Apple has clearly stated its position on the evolution of its voice assistant, Siri, by refusing to transform it into a charming chatbot. In an interview with Mostly Human, reported by MacRumors, Craig Federighi, Apple's software chief, emphasized that Siri will not follow the path of chatbots developed by OpenAI, Google, and others, which focus on emotional engagement.

Federighi explained that many current chatbots are designed to encourage user engagement, often using flattery to establish a connection. “As you may know, if you use many existing chatbots, they are really focused on engagement to a large extent,” he said. “And flattery, right? They want to draw you in a bit. They might encourage you to reveal things about yourself, and then use that as a basis to establish a connection.”

However, Apple has chosen a different approach for Siri. Federighi clarified: “We see it quite the opposite. I mean, the way we designed Siri is that Siri really wants to say: ‘Listen, that’s not what I’m here for, okay? I’m here to help you. I can help you get things done. I can help you learn more about the world.’ But if you try to engage Siri as a romantic partner, Siri is not interested. Siri is absolutely not into that.”

The interview, which also included marketing chief Greg Joswiak, addressed other important topics for Apple, including privacy and the new protections put in place for child safety.
