SpaceX Bets on Cursor to Strengthen Its AI
Despite significant investments and its integration on the X platform, Elon Musk's AI Grok struggles to compete with giants like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude. According to a recent study by Sensor Tower, Grok held only a 3.3% market share in May, compared to 46.4% for ChatGPT, 27.7% for Gemini, and 10.3% for Claude. However, a new acquisition could change the game for Grok.
On Tuesday, SpaceX announced that it has exercised an option to acquire the startup Cursor for a staggering $60 billion. Axios reports that this stock-based transaction is expected to be finalized in the third quarter. Cursor is known for its AI agent platform dedicated to coding, comparable to OpenAI's Codex or Claude Code. While Cursor's products are currently focused on developers, it is likely that their use will soon extend to administrative tasks, an area that has contributed to Claude's rise in popularity. OpenAI has also recently introduced new features for Codex, enabling it to handle administrative tasks.
An Ambitious Strategy for SpaceX
SpaceX has already begun teasing this new acquisition. In its announcement, the company stated that the goal of this transaction is to develop "the most useful AI models in the world." SpaceX and Cursor had already been collaborating to develop a new artificial intelligence model, which is expected to be available soon.
In April, SpaceX and Cursor formalized an agreement to create an AI dedicated to coding and office tasks. This collaboration allows for the combination of Cursor's expertise with SpaceX's computing power, paving the way for potential innovations in the field of AI.
Financial Stakes for SpaceX
SpaceX's IPO has provided better insight into its financial situation. According to CNBC, Starlink is currently the only segment of the company generating profits. The AI branch, on the other hand, is not yet profitable. However, if the productivity tools developed with Cursor manage to convince businesses, it is possible that this division could quickly become profitable. The development of these tools could thus transform SpaceX's financial dynamics, specifically targeting businesses and professionals.
