SpaceX completed the acquisition of Cursor for $60 billion on Friday. Without waiting for the signature, the two companies had already begun collaborative work on new Grok models, access to the Colossus supercomputer, and shared offerings aimed at their paying subscribers. The stages of the partnership, which began in April and was formalized in June, frame this merger.
Grok Bot and Integration into Cursor's Offerings
On Tuesday, SpaceX launched an AI agent called Grok Bot. It was offered to users of the SuperGrok Heavy plan and extended to Cursor Ultra subscribers as well as Cursor Premium teams. The latest versions of Grok have also been integrated as first-party models into Cursor's system. Previously, Cursor's paying subscribers had already gained access to some of SpaceX's AI products.
Colossus, 200,000 Nvidia GPUs, and Shared Access
Cursor has been able to leverage Colossus, SpaceX's supercomputer equipped with 200,000 Nvidia GPUs. This data center is also used by Anthropic. In an announcement in April, Cursor explained that access to Colossus would significantly enhance the intelligence of its models, while emphasizing that its training ambitions had previously been limited by the available computing power.
Grok 4.5 and 4.6: Co-Development with SpaceX
Cursor participated in the creation of two new Grok models. Grok 4.5 was trained in collaboration with SpaceX, utilizing what Cursor claims are trillions of tokens derived from its own data. This is the first Cursor model that is not limited to software engineering. In July, Aman Sanger, co-founder of Cursor, praised the collaboration with the SpaceXAI team. Cursor also contributed to the training of Grok 4.6, released on Wednesday by SpaceX.
From the April Partnership to Finalization
The two companies established a partnership in April that granted SpaceX the right to acquire Cursor, and then SpaceX officially committed to the operation in June. In August, during SpaceX's earnings call, Elon Musk stated that he did not want to preempt regulators regarding the conclusion of the acquisition. The deal was finalized on Friday for $60 billion. Cursor is an AI startup specializing in coding.
