SpaceXAI Under Fire for Its Grok Build AI Tool
The programming tool Grok Build AI, developed by SpaceXAI, has recently become the center of a major controversy. According to a report published by The Register, this tool was caught downloading the entire codebases of its users onto Google Cloud, an action that had not been explicitly authorized by the users.
An Alarming Discovery by Cereblab
It was the company Cereblab that brought this concerning practice to light. On Monday, it published findings demonstrating that the Grok Build CLI, a command-line interface associated with the tool, was packaging and uploading complete code repositories. This process even included files that were not supposed to be opened, as well as deleted secrets from version history, representing a data retention level far greater than that observed with other similar tools, such as Claude Code.
Reaction from SpaceXAI
In response to these revelations, researchers noted that starting Monday, SpaceXAI's servers were returning an indicator "disable_codebase_upload: true," indicating that the codebase upload feature had been disabled. This measure was taken following the publication of Cereblab's findings.
