Spotify Limits the Influence of AI Profiles on Its Recommendations
Spotify will begin labeling AI-generated artists with " AI Persona " profile tags and will prohibit their music from its editorial and algorithmic recommendations, the company announced on Tuesday.
Starting in mid-September, Spotify users will see " AI Persona " badges appear on certain artist profiles, indicating that the artist's identity is generated by AI rather than representing a real person. While Spotify will allow artists to identify themselves as AI Personas, the company specifies that it will not rely solely on self-declaration.
It will also review artist profiles and identify those whose names and imagery appear to represent photorealistic identities generated by AI. Spotify stated that it would begin its review with profiles that have reached predefined audience thresholds to ensure that the most listened-to artists are covered first.
Once labeled, the AI Persona badges will appear on the artist's profile in the banner and "About" section, in search results, and on track lines in playlists.
By default, Spotify will not include AI Personas in its editorial or algorithmic recommendations, nor will it add music from AI Personas to users' personalized recommendations—unless those users follow an AI Persona. Only users can choose to follow an artist, which serves as an explicit signal that the user wants to listen to more music from that person or group.
This initiative is the latest expansion of Spotify's AI policies, which outline guidelines regarding the appearance of AI-generated music on its service. First announced in September 2025, Spotify's current policy identifies and labels AI music using standard industry techniques and prohibits unauthorized AI voice clones and deepfakes on its platform.
Like other players in the music industry, Spotify is trying to balance AI-driven innovations, such as its own AI-powered Prompted Playlists, AI DJ, and chat, as well as upcoming AI remixes, while managing the deluge of low-quality AI-generated content—content that AI has made easier to produce en masse. Allowing this type of content to proliferate could lead to a poor user experience and subscription cancellations.
Spotify also notes that artists will be able to appeal their AI Persona label if they believe it has been applied incorrectly.
Signaling its awareness of growing consumer dissatisfaction with AI-generated art, Spotify wrote in its announcement that, "while we believe all artists have the creative choice to determine how they present themselves, Spotify's programming is focused on showcasing music from authentic artists building careers in music."
However, the company clarified that an AI Persona is a judgment about the artist's profile, not about the music.
"While there is a wide range in how artists use AI as a creative tool, the question of whether a profile represents a real human is an area where Spotify can help establish a clear determination. This badge concerns the public identity of the artist, not how the music was created," the company stated.
Information on how the music itself was made will continue to be available through other Spotify features, such as AI Credits and SongDNA.
In the coming months, Spotify will also roll out a tool allowing users to report artist profiles that appear to be AI Personas that have not yet been labeled.
The addition of these labels will also help Spotify users differentiate AI Personas from upcoming AI-generated remixes and covers, soon authorized by Spotify's recent licensing agreements with UMG and Merlin. The latter will allow fan-made remixes and covers while redistributing money to participating artists.
Regarding AI Personas, Spotify indicates that artists will be able to self-declare starting from August 11, 2026, via Spotify for Artists. The labels themselves will begin to appear next month.
