Stripe Unveils Link, a Digital Wallet for the AI Era

Stripe, the well-known financial services platform, recently announced the launch of Link, an innovative digital wallet. This new tool is specifically designed to meet the needs of the artificial intelligence era, allowing autonomous agents to perform various financial tasks such as purchases, reservation payments, and ticket buying.

During its annual conference, Stripe highlighted the capabilities of Link, which centralizes different payment methods, tracks expenses, and manages recurring subscriptions. This digital wallet stands out for its ability to integrate AI agents, enabling them to conduct transactions securely on behalf of the user.

Extensive Features of Link

Available on web, iOS, and Android platforms, Link offers a range of features expected from a modern digital wallet. Users can connect various payment methods, from bank cards to crypto wallets, as well as immediate purchase services with deferred payment. Additionally, it allows users to store essential information for online payments, such as billing and shipping details.

Among its practical features, Link provides the ability to view expenses and track recurring subscriptions, with the option to update saved payment methods. A 90-day protection is also offered on eligible purchases made with certain merchants.

Integration with Autonomous AI Agents

What truly sets Link apart is its compatibility with autonomous AI agents, such as OpenClaw. As the use of autonomous AI is experiencing explosive growth, particularly with the depletion of Apple’s Mac Mini stock, some users remain hesitant to share their payment information with these agents.

Link addresses this concern by allowing users to connect their AI agents and grant them permission to pay without directly exposing their financial information. This connection is made through an OAuth authentication process, ensuring secure access.

Security and Transaction Control

To use Link, users must first grant access to their wallet via OAuth. Once this step is completed, the AI agent can submit a spending request, provide the necessary context, and await user approval. Currently, this system works with traditional payment methods, but Stripe plans to soon integrate agent tokens, stablecoins, and other payment methods.

Users receive notifications on mobile and web to approve spending requests, allowing them to verify each transaction before payment information is shared with the AI agent. Stripe also intends to expand control options, enabling users to set spending limits or choose when their agents can act without prior approval.

An Innovative Infrastructure for AI Agents

Link is built on Stripe's new "Issuing for agents" infrastructure, which allows users to create virtual cards for agents to make purchases autonomously. This infrastructure offers real-time authorization, spending controls, and complete transaction visibility.

Rather than providing direct access to payment information, users can provide programmatic access to Link, generating a one-time use card, or use a Shared Payment Token (SPT), supported by payment cards and banks.
