Suno Launches V6 Under License and Prepares to Phase Out Old Models

Suno, which is facing lawsuits and has admitted to using YouTube videos to train its models, has introduced Suno v6, a new family of models developed from licensed catalogs. Three versions are offered, featuring advanced editing capabilities and recent agreements with labels.
Ongoing Lawsuits, Admission on YouTube, and Announced Safeguards
Suno is still under litigation from labels like Sony and Universal Music Group, as well as from artists such as Jason Isbell. Some users are also suing the company, alleging that it has neglected safety in favor of its financial interests. The announcement of the new model range comes a day after Suno admitted to using YouTube videos for training its models. Last month, Suno announced the upcoming addition of a watermark to tracks generated on its platform and recently implemented download limits based on account level. Jack Brody, product director, states that Suno can help manage issues like streaming fraud and mass uploads to low-intent distributors, while believing that content regulation falls to distributors and platforms. According to PitchBook, Suno has raised over $819 million in funding to date.
Three Variants of v6, with Paid or Open Access
The Suno v6 family includes three models. The base model, Suno v6, is reserved for paying users and is presented as reliable and controllable for managed results. Suno also offers v6 wild, an experimental version aimed at paying accounts, designed to foster ideation and generate unexpected results. Additionally, v6 mini corresponds to a faster variant, open to all users. According to the company, this series allows for more flexible usage.

Creative Capabilities and Remixes Subject to a Program
Suno v6 allows users to edit a part of a song from a prompt or a word from the lyrics and to use text, images, or videos as references to generate a track. It is also possible to isolate an instrument from a sample and create a new rhythm from it. Suno plans to add features such as user remixing, subject to the agreement of the concerned artists as part of a new program developed with the labels, which will allow the use of their songs for AI-generated features. Jack Brody, product director, believes that derivative works offer more revenue opportunities for all stakeholders and that this release aims in part to create new streams for rights holders and artists.
Licensed Data, Recent Agreements, and Withdrawal of Old Models
Suno v6 has been developed from licensed data obtained from labels and distributors such as Warner Music Group, BMG, and Believe. The company specifies that the data used for previous versions was not used to train v6. Suno reached an agreement with Warner Music Group last year and signed a contract with BMG last month. The company also plans to withdraw its old models.
