Suno Tackles the Proliferation of AI-Generated Music

Suno has announced plans to implement new watermarking technology and a download policy to limit the spread of low-quality AI-generated music and increase transparency. In a lengthy blog post, CEO and co-founder Mikey Shulman outlined the company's principles and next steps to gain legitimacy.

The company is rolling out new transparency tools, as well as watermarking and fingerprinting technologies. Shulman claims that this aligns with emerging industry standards that will facilitate the identification of content generated by Suno. He also mentioned that the company aims to partner with distribution platforms to combat fraud and abuse.

Last year, the company also announced that it would modify its download policy following a settlement with Warner Music Group (WMG), and after a similar settlement between WMG and Udio that ended downloads of productions from that platform. The company has not yet provided specific details, but at the time, it indicated that downloads would be limited to paying subscribers, and that users would be restricted to a certain number of downloads per month.

Shulman's post repeatedly mentions the company's commitment to transparency, respect for rights holders, and the importance of art created by humans. However, he also clarifies that it is not Suno's responsibility to "judge" the value of individual works, and that it is ultimately up to artists and platforms to decide whether they wish to disclose the use of AI tools.

Suno did not immediately respond to a request for clarification regarding the new policies and technologies.
