Thinking Machines Lab Innovates with Interaction Models
The artificial intelligence startup Thinking Machines Lab, founded by Mira Murati, former CTO of OpenAI, recently unveiled a major advancement in the field of AI. The company introduced the concept of interaction models, aimed at transforming the way AIs interact with users.
Towards More Natural Interaction
Traditionally, AI models follow a simple exchange pattern: the user speaks, the AI listens, and then responds. Thinking Machines seeks to disrupt this model by developing an AI capable of processing inputs and generating responses simultaneously. This approach, called “full duplex,” resembles a smooth phone conversation more than a simple chain of messages.
Promising Performance
The proposed model, TML-Interaction-Small, is capable of responding in just 0.40 seconds. This speed is comparable to that of a natural human conversation and surpasses the performance of current models from OpenAI and Google. However, it is important to note that this technology is still in the research phase and is not yet available to the general public.
A Gradual Launch
Thinking Machines plans to launch a “limited research preview” in the coming months, with a broader release anticipated by the end of the year. While the benchmarks are impressive, the effectiveness of this technology in real-world situations remains to be proven. Users will have to wait to see if the technical promises translate into an enhanced user experience.
