TikTok: AI for Memes Worries Creators

TikTok recently confirmed to CNET that it is testing a new AI-powered meme creation feature. This experimental tool allows users to remix existing videos to generate AI images, leading to the introduction of a new setting on the platform. This setting, enabled by default, allows other users to remix content with AI unless the creator explicitly opts out. This development has raised concerns among creators who fear for the safety of their data.

The feature, called the meme remixer, allows a TikTok video to be transformed into an AI-generated image, potentially altering the face, voice, or background. For instance, a video showing a person in a café could be reworked to depict them on a beach. These images would then be shared in the comments of the original video, raising questions about privacy and the integrity of the original content.

Some TikTok users view this feature as an invasion of their privacy, a new attempt by social media platforms to subtly alter original content. For TikTok, it is a way to expand the possibility of posting images in comments, which could enhance interaction on the platform.

Sean Szolek-Van Valkenburgh, a creator on TikTok, expressed his dissatisfaction with the difficulty of disabling this setting. He stated that it shouldn't be so complicated to opt out with a single setting. While creators relinquish some rights over their content by publishing it, they should be able to limit AI exploitation.

TikTok has introduced various AI features over the years, such as the Tako assistant. However, the integration of AI has faced criticism, particularly regarding its impact on original content and environmental, legal, and ethical concerns. Despite this, companies like TikTok, Snapchat, and Meta continue to explore these technologies.

Feature in Testing Phase

The meme remixer is still in the experimental phase and is not widely available. TikTok has not specified when it might be rolled out more broadly or how it could evolve before its official launch. The AI remix setting is enabled by default, and users must disable it for each video individually. This constraint could prove tedious for those who post frequently.

TikTok clarified that remixed videos will not be used to train its AI models. However, creators cannot verify this claim, which fuels their skepticism. In its general AI policy, TikTok states that any content edited or created by AI must adhere to its community guidelines.

TikTok's rules regarding edited media specifically prohibit content that misleads users into believing something false is real, particularly when it depicts false authoritative sources or crisis events, or falsely shows public figures in certain contexts. Material depicting sexual abuse of minors is also explicitly prohibited.

AI-edited content shared on TikTok carries an invisible watermark, compliant with the C2PA standard. However, with increasingly powerful AI image and video models, it becomes difficult for users to distinguish between real and AI-generated content.

Policies and Concerns

While the policies may seem good on paper, their implementation is what matters. A creator, Georgie, who uses the pseudonym soupytime, pointed out that it is already easy for people to repost or steal viral videos, and the new AI tool would further facilitate the creation of deepfakes of well-known creators without their consent. This can be dangerous, as seen with Grok AI on X. Without adequate precautions, it is easy for social media users to take photos and videos that people share online and transform them into abusive or illegal content.

To disable this feature, tap the three dots in the bottom right corner, scroll down, and tap on privacy settings, then disable "Allow AI to remix content." You will need to do this for each video you wish to opt out of.
