ChatGPT has recently introduced a feature that allows users to upload and manipulate files directly within their conversations. This advancement means that tasks such as analyzing spreadsheets, editing documents, summarizing PDFs, or working with images can be performed without leaving the chat interface.

File Processing Features

To start using this feature, simply initiate a conversation with ChatGPT. Users can then upload their files by accessing the tools menu and selecting "Add photos or files." Supported formats include CSV, XLSX, PDF, DOCX, JPEG, PNG, TXT, among others.

Once the file is uploaded, users can ask questions or give specific tasks to ChatGPT. For example, one can request a summary of the main findings of a report while mentioning risks or open questions, visualize sales data by region and highlight the biggest changes month by month, rewrite a document to make it clearer, or extract key dates and responsible parties from a PDF into a simple table.

Users can also experiment in the chat by requesting specific views like tables or graphs, or by downloading results generated by ChatGPT, such as updated tables or PDFs.

Integration with Third-Party Tools

Certain versions of ChatGPT offer the ability to use third-party applications, allowing ChatGPT to access external tools to enrich conversations. Users can check the available applications in the settings and proceed to connect them through an authentication and permissions process. The applications appear in the tools during discussions or can be invoked using @ or /.

In Enterprise workspaces, access to applications is controlled by the organization's administrator. It is important to note that, by default, business data accessible through these applications is not used to train OpenAI's models.
