When a car accident occurs, Travelers' clients seek quick and effective assistance. However, meeting this demand on a large scale is a challenge, especially during catastrophic events that generate over 100,000 claims in just a few days. In 2022, Travelers processed more than 1.5 million claims, paying out over $23 billion in losses.
To address these challenges, Travelers developed the AI Claims Assistant, an autonomous voice solution using OpenAI's real-time API. This system guides clients through the initial loss reporting for auto property damage, answers questions about policies, collects necessary details, and submits claims.
After an initial launch in eight states, Travelers quickly expanded the use of this assistant nationwide in just two months. Currently, between 85 and 90% of clients using the AI Assistant are able to complete their claim submission through this system.
Patrick Gee, SVP of auto and property claims at Travelers, emphasizes that the ability of OpenAI's real-time model to operate effectively in this environment has been crucial. Travelers has integrated these models into its claims infrastructure and internal systems to ensure secure large-scale operations.
Thanks to this innovation, clients benefit from support available 24/7 with no wait time, even during disasters. Meanwhile, claims professionals can focus on more complex cases that require human intervention.
