Three Climbers Rescued on Mount Shasta After Night in a Canyon

Sheriff advises calling rangers and not relying on AI
The Siskiyou County Sheriff's Office recommends contacting the Mount Shasta ranger station of the U.S. Forest Service in advance for the most reliable information, and never to rely solely on artificial intelligence to organize a trip. According to the same office, Gemini advised the hikers to bring much less food and water than their group needed, while their planned 8-hour ascent turned into a multi-day ordeal. The exact responsibility of the chatbot in the decisions made by the hikers is not clearly established.

Three young men began their hike at 3 AM, according to the sheriff's office. Although it is advised to turn back if the summit is not reached by noon, they reached the summit at 7 PM. The group attempted to descend in the dark and contacted the sheriff's office for directions. They spent the night in the Mud Creek canyon before being rescued the following morning by forest rangers and volunteers.
Preparation done with Gemini, Google’s chatbot
The hikers had used Gemini, Google’s artificial intelligence chatbot, to plan their expedition. Their rescue took place this week at Mount Shasta, California.
