Trump and Mike Johnson Reject Call to Curb AI

While figures in AI advocate for a slowdown, Donald Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson oppose this idea. Both cite the risk of falling behind China and raise concerns about national security.
Trump and Mike Johnson Raise the Chinese Argument
Donald Trump asserts that the United States is ahead of China in artificial intelligence and wants to keep it that way, stating: “Listen, we are ahead of China in AI... and frankly, I want it to stay that way, because whoever wins in AI, wins,” according to the Financial Times. Mike Johnson, the House Speaker, believes that rushing to impose restrictions on AI development could pose a threat to national security. In an interview on CNN with Jake Tapper, he urged against panic and stated that if Congress held an emergency session to regulate AI, the United States could risk losing the race against China. Both consider that AI leaders are overreacting and that a pause could benefit Beijing.
