Trump Eases Restrictions on Anthropic Mythos 5

Two weeks after the Trump administration imposed a strict ban on Anthropic's cybersecurity models, including Mythos 5 and Fable 5, a new directive has relaxed this position. The initial ban forced Anthropic to withdraw its models from the market, raising concerns among businesses and agencies that relied on these tools for their cybersecurity.

Now, the administration allows Anthropic to make Mythos 5 accessible to over 100 specific government agencies and American companies. This decision also includes access for non-American employees of these organizations, marking a significant shift from the initial ban. According to reports from Semafor and Reuters, even non-American employees of Anthropic, who were previously excluded, can now use these models.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick sent a letter to Tom Brown, the Chief Information Officer of Anthropic, confirming that adequate protective measures are now in place. This allows trusted partners to access the Claude Mythos 5 model. The letter, seen by Semafor, emphasizes the importance of these measures to ensure security while allowing for controlled and secure use of the model.

Fable 5 Remains on Hold

However, this directive does not mention the reintroduction of Fable 5. This model, a version of Mythos 5, had been widely distributed shortly before the ban, as it was supposed to offer additional protections. Both models were withdrawn after security researchers discovered ways to easily bypass these protections. Anthropic has not yet responded to our requests for comments regarding this situation.

Ongoing Collaboration with the Government

Anthropic has publicly acknowledged these developments in a post on X, indicating that they have been working closely with the U.S. government since June 12 to restore access to Claude Mythos 5 and Fable 5. The company announced that the government had informed them that Mythos 5, their most advanced cybersecurity model, could be redeployed to a set of American organizations responsible for managing and defending critical infrastructure. Anthropic is striving to quickly restore access for these organizations and continues to collaborate with the government to potentially expand access to Mythos 5 and make Fable 5 available again for broader use.
