TSMC Faces Insatiable Demand for AI Semiconductors
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), recognized as the world's largest semiconductor manufacturer, is struggling to meet the growing demand from its clients, particularly in the United States. Despite expanding its production capabilities in the U.S., the company is having difficulty keeping pace with the surge in artificial intelligence.
TSMC's CEO, C.C. Wei, recently expressed his concerns following a meeting with shareholders. "Customer demand is so high, and we can only support a certain level," he stated, emphasizing the company's efforts to avoid becoming a bottleneck in the supply chain.
A Booming Market
The rise of AI has already put pressure on the memory industry, with shortages of RAM and NAND Flash expected to persist for several years. According to Deloitte, the semiconductor market could reach $1 trillion by 2027, driven by this increasing demand.
Although C.C. Wei has expressed a desire to raise TSMC's prices, he clarified that the company does not anticipate increases as drastic as those seen for DRAM and SSDs.
Massive Investments in the United States
To address this demand, TSMC has already opened a factory in Arizona and plans to invest $165 billion in the construction of three additional factories in the United States. In addition to these factories, the company intends to develop two advanced packaging facilities and a research and development center.
However, Wei warned that it could take a "very long time" for these new facilities to fully meet the needs of its American clients.
