Uber Limits AI Use to Cut Costs

Uber has recently implemented a policy aimed at limiting expenses related to the use of AI-based coding tools. According to a company spokesperson, each coding tool, such as Claude Code from Anthropic PBC or Cursor, is now subject to a spending cap of $1,500 per month. This decision was confirmed in response to a request from Bloomberg News.

These spending limits have been put in place in recent months and apply only to agentic coding software. A notable feature of this policy is that the expenses for one tool do not affect the budget of another, allowing for distinct and controlled cost management for each tool.

The establishment of this budget limit appears to be a strategic response to prevent overconsumption of these technologies. Indeed, such an approach is considered more rational than "tokenmaxxing" methods, which encourage employees to maximize the use of AI tools. By setting these limits, Uber aims to establish a clear monetary value for the use of these technologies.

Considering that each engineer actively uses two tools, this amounts to a cap of $3,000 per month, or $36,000 per year. To put this in perspective, the median annual salary of a software engineer at Uber in the United States is $330,000, according to Levels.fyi. Thus, the budget allocated to AI represents about 11% of this median salary.

An individual user, such as the author of the source article, noted that their own token consumption amounts to about $1,000 per month for each provider, like Anthropic and OpenAI. However, thanks to subsidized plans for individual subscribers, this cost is reduced to $100 per provider. These plans are not available for companies the size of Uber, which explains the need for this new spending limit policy. With this policy, an Uber employee could still have $500 per month for each tool, depending on their current usage habits.
