Uber Bets on AI to Transform Its Internal Departments

Praveen Neppalli Naga, Uber's Chief Technology Officer, recently unveiled an ambitious strategy to integrate artificial intelligence across the company's various departments. By utilizing what he calls "agentic pods," Uber has begun deploying AI agents in diverse areas such as human resources, finance, and legal. This initiative aims to optimize the company's internal operations by pairing specialized engineers with these teams for a two-week period. During this time, the engineers work closely with employees to develop AI solutions tailored to their specific needs.

A Collaborative Approach to Innovation

In a post on X, Naga explained that 30 of Uber's most talented engineers have been integrated into various departments within the company. These engineers spent two weeks working alongside employees, observing their workflows and identifying tasks that could benefit from AI automation. This approach has led to the creation of 16 agentic pods over the past two months, each designed to address specific needs within the company.

Automating Complex Processes

Uber's engineers have focused their efforts on automating often repetitive and time-consuming tasks, such as generating financial reports. These tasks typically require access to multiple systems and involve a considerable amount of manual work. To effectively automate these processes, the engineers needed to gain a deep understanding of how the tasks actually function, beyond simple process diagrams or existing documentation. As Naga emphasized, a detailed understanding of daily work is essential for creating effective AI solutions.

Impressive Time Savings

The results of this AI integration are significant. For instance, the creation of financial reports, which previously took two days, can now be completed in just ten minutes thanks to AI agents. Similarly, capital allocation in the 150 cities where Uber operates, a task that required 15 hours, is now accomplished in 30 minutes. These improvements demonstrate the potential of AI to transform internal operations and enhance efficiency.

A Promising but Uncertain Future

Uber's initiative with agentic pods highlights a crucial role in a context where the tech industry is experiencing mass layoffs. Despite these workforce reductions, companies continue to recruit specialized engineers to work directly on the ground with teams. However, the question of the profitability of these AI investments remains open. Andrew Macdonald, Uber's Chief Operating Officer, expressed doubts about justifying the increasing expenditures on AI, despite the lack of a proportional increase in useful features for consumers.

Despite these challenges, Uber continues to invest in AI. Naga revealed that the company had already reached its budget for the Claude Code program in the spring. Nevertheless, Uber remains committed to further exploring the potential of agentic pods. "We are forming a dedicated team to deepen this approach and fundamentally transform the way the company operates through AI," Naga stated, underscoring Uber's commitment to reshaping its internal processes for a more efficient future.
