UBS Will Require AI Skills for Juniors Starting in 2027

More than 200,000 banking jobs could disappear in Europe over the next five years, according to analysts at Morgan Stanley. In this context, UBS is making AI skills mandatory for juniors starting in 2027, while emphasizing that fundamentals remain essential.

Estimated Job Cuts and Avatars Tested at UBS

According to analysts from Morgan Stanley, over 200,000 banking jobs are expected to vanish in Europe within the next five years. At the same time, UBS is testing the use of analyst avatars during presentations aimed at its clients. In December, Conor Hillery, UBS's head in Europe, emphasized that juniors should not overlook the fundamentals.

From 2027, AI Becomes a Prerequisite for Juniors

Starting in 2027, graduates and interns wishing to begin their careers in Global Banking and Markets at UBS will need to demonstrate how they can use AI to enhance outcomes and efficiency. Recruitment interviews will include questions about candidates' use of AI. This requirement adds to traditional criteria, such as a solid degree, and will also apply to other recently posted positions. UBS clarifies that AI skills complement academic and social abilities, rather than replace them. The bank now considers these skills essential for recruitment.

Increased Automation and Early Adopters in the Sector

Banking institutions are increasingly turning to automation for a growing number of repetitive tasks assigned to juniors, such as financial analysis, research, and client presentations. According to its documents, the Spanish bank Santander is also targeting profiles skilled in AI for some of its training programs. UBS is among the first major banks to officially make AI proficiency mandatory.
