However, during this event, synchronization issues resulted in notable errors. The ceremony was interrupted at least twice in an attempt to resolve these problems, but without immediate success.
Reactions and Proposed Solutions
In light of the AI errors, Tiffany Hernandez explained to attendees that the name-reading tool was responsible for the disruptions. Initially, the affected graduates were unable to return to the stage, but after criticism, a second chance was granted to them with a human announcer.
The platform Tassel, often used for these announcements, promises accuracy thanks to an AI model trained on actors' voices. It allows students to verify the pronunciation of their names before the ceremony. Despite this, automation can make the event feel impersonal, a point raised by June Prakash, president of the teachers' union in Arlington.
Towards a Hybrid Approach?
Glendale Community College did not specify which AI system was used, but the incident reignites the debate over the effectiveness of these tools. A hybrid approach, combining AI and a human announcer, could prevent such errors while respecting students' identities. Washington-Liberty High School in Arlington has decided to cancel the use of Tassel for its upcoming ceremony, opting for a more human-centered approach.
June Prakash emphasized that the pronunciation of a name by someone who knows the student or has taken the time to learn their name reflects respect and a sense of belonging. Delegating this responsibility to a machine can inadvertently send the message that efficiency takes precedence over identity. This reflection has led some schools to reconsider the exclusive use of AI for these important moments.
