An Overview of the New Siri Application
As the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) approaches in June, Bloomberg has released renders that provide a glimpse of the anticipated improvements for Siri. These renders suggest that Apple is working on an entirely new Siri application, designed to compete with popular AI chatbots such as ChatGPT. The images, based on information obtained by Bloomberg, illustrate how these new capabilities of Siri will be integrated into the iOS operating system.
Siri Integration in the Dynamic Island
In the new version of iOS 27, users will still be able to activate Siri by pressing a button. However, the animation and responses from Siri will now appear from the Dynamic Island of the iPhone. This pill-shaped black area, located at the top of the screen, is already used to display live activities and interactive updates. This change aims to enhance the user experience for quick voice queries or searches, similar to how Siri is currently utilized.
A New AI-Powered Search Mode
Apple is introducing a new mode that will make Siri-powered search more accessible. By capitalizing on users' muscle memory, the gesture of swiping down on the screen will open Spotlight Search. This feature allows users to find information both on the device and on the web. From now on, these searches will utilize Siri's AI, which incorporates a rebuilt AI model using Google's Gemini AI technology, thus providing enhanced intelligence.
iPhone users will be able to perform various actions such as searching for information, launching apps, sending messages, asking for the weather, adding calendar appointments, checking their notes, and triggering app shortcuts. The results will be displayed in formatted text within a card-style interface that also emerges from the Dynamic Island.
Strategic Collaboration with Google
Apple's approach to AI is notably similar to its long-standing partnership with Google, which has made Google the default search engine on the iPhone. Building a search engine from scratch has never been part of Apple's plans, and AI presents a similar challenge. Developing cutting-edge AI is costly and complex, which is why Apple collaborates with external partners to integrate the AI technology that users are seeking today. At the same time, Apple is developing its own models, including local AI that operates directly on devices rather than in the cloud, allowing Apple to maintain its reputation for privacy.
A Standalone Siri Application to Compete with Chatbots
Bloomberg also reports that Apple is working on a new standalone Siri application, designed to directly compete with chatbots like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and others. This application will allow users to review their chat history and add documents and photos, in addition to text.
Scale is a major asset for Apple. While ChatGPT currently has 900 million weekly active users, Apple's install base, which includes all devices and not just the iPhone, reaches 2.5 billion. This provides Apple with a unique opportunity to introduce AI to an audience that has yet to adopt standalone AI tools.
