Hachette Withdraws 'Shy Girl': Suspicions of AI Behind the Novel

Hachette Book Group recently made the decision not to publish the novel "Shy Girl," citing concerns over the use of artificial intelligence in its writing. This horror novel, which was set to be released in the United States this spring, will also be withdrawn from the British market where it was already available.

This decision comes after a thorough review of the text was conducted by the publisher. Critics on platforms like GoodReads and YouTube had already raised doubts, suggesting that the book might have been generated by AI. The New York Times reported that it had contacted Hachette regarding these concerns the day before the official announcement.

Mia Ballard, the author of "Shy Girl," denied using artificial intelligence to write her book. In an email to the New York Times, she explained that the responsibility lay with an acquaintance she had hired to edit the original self-published version of the novel. Ballard expressed her intention to take legal action and revealed that this controversy had severely affected her mental health and tarnished her reputation.

Writer Lincoln Michel, along with other industry experts, pointed out that American publishers rarely conduct thorough revisions when acquiring titles that have already been published in other forms. This situation highlights the challenges publishers face in ensuring the authenticity of literary works in the age of artificial intelligence.
