Elon Musk Ordered to Tone Down Alarmist Comments on AI in Court

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has been urged to moderate his alarmist remarks about artificial intelligence during his testimony in the lawsuit against OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman. The trial, taking place in California, concerns the $38 million that Musk claims to have donated to the nonprofit organization OpenAI. Musk accuses his co-founders, Altman and Greg Brockman, of straying from the organization's original mission, which was to develop AI for the public good, not for personal gain.

On the third day of testimony, Musk repeatedly referenced catastrophic scenarios inspired by the 1984 film Terminator, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. This admonition came after Musk was questioned by his attorney, Steven Molo, about Tesla's robot manufacturing activities. Musk denied any intention to create weapons while expressing his desire to avoid a "Terminator" scenario. He also mentioned the "building of an army of robots."

Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers interrupted Musk when he began to discuss these apocalyptic scenarios. "We will not talk about extinction in this case," she stated firmly, putting an end to Musk's speculations. Musk clarified that in the film, the situation is not good, adding that "the worst situation would be if AI kills us all, I suppose."

The trial, now in its fourth day, highlights the tensions surrounding the evolution of AI and the responsibilities of the companies developing it. Musk claimed that his co-founders at OpenAI have been "unduly enriched to the tune of hundreds of billions of dollars," which is a central part of his complaint.

Despite owning xAI, a company specializing in artificial intelligence and creator of Grok, Musk has consistently expressed concerns about the risks associated with AI. In 2017, he tweeted that AI posed a risk far greater than that of North Korea. Since the beginning of his testimony, he has made numerous references to scenarios where AI could escape all control, comparing the technology to a child that could "explode" without proper guidance.

Musk also reiterated his long-standing concern about AI, questioning what happens when computers become much smarter than humans. He stated that in the event of a conflict between humans and AI, he would remain "pro-human." "We don't want a 'Terminator' outcome," he reiterated during his initial testimony.
