An Innovative Tool to Detect AI Music
Deezer, the French music streaming service, has recently introduced an innovative tool designed to identify music generated by artificial intelligence (AI) on major streaming platforms, including Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music, and SoundCloud. This tool, available for free, allows users to scan their playlists for tracks created by AI.
To use this tool, it is not necessary to have a Deezer account. However, users must grant permission for the site to access the chosen streaming service. Once the playlist is imported, the tool analyzes the content to identify potentially synthetic tracks and offers the option to share the results. However, it is up to the user to manually delete any suspicious tracks.
How the Detection Tool Works
The process of importing playlists can take about 10 minutes for large lists, as noted by a user during a test with Spotify. According to a spokesperson for Deezer, the tool works by detecting frequency artifacts, spectral features unique to the generative models used to create AI music. These artifacts were identified by studying tracks created with popular generators like Suno and Udio.
Alexis Lanternier, CEO of Deezer, hopes that this tool will be a "revealing experience" for users. He emphasizes that AI-generated music is no longer a marginal phenomenon and calls on the entire music ecosystem to act to protect artists' rights and promote transparency.
The Proliferation of AI Music
The launch of this tool comes at a time when AI-generated music is flooding streaming platforms. In June, Deezer revealed that 44% of new tracks uploaded to its platform were generated by AI, amounting to about 75,000 songs per day. However, these tracks represent only a small fraction of listens, between 1% and 3%, and about 85% of these listens are suspected to be the result of fraudulent activities, such as bot streaming.
Consumer interest in AI music also seems to be declining. A 2026 report from Luminate showed a drop in interest of 13% to 20% between May and November 2025, particularly among Generation Z and Alpha, who are becoming increasingly skeptical.
Most other streaming platforms either lack AI labeling or have largely relied on voluntary declarations for AI labels. Deezer is taking the lead by providing users with a way to check whether their favorite music is the product of AI or a human artist.
