AI Chatbots Rely Heavily on Journalism
A recent study conducted by Muckrack has revealed that 25% of the citations used by artificial intelligence systems come from journalistic sources. This analysis focused on 15 million citations generated by platforms such as Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, and ChatGPT. The findings were reported by Press Gazette.
The Most Cited Publications and Journalists
Specialized journalists and niche publications are particularly prominent in AI responses. Henry Blodget, former CEO of Business Insider, is identified as the most cited journalist globally. Among publications, Reuters takes the top spot, closely followed by Forbes. In the UK, The Guardian is the most frequently cited media outlet, with Homes and Gardens magazine in second place.
Muckrack and AI Visibility
To conduct this study, Muckrack sent millions of queries to the four mentioned AI services, analyzing the frequency of specific journalists and media appearing as sources. Based on this data, Muckrack developed a new feature that assesses the "AI visibility" of journalists and publications, categorized into three distinct levels.
Google AI Snippets: Other Popular Sources
In parallel, an analysis of Google’s AI Snippets, which are AI-generated responses directly integrated into search results, showed that Facebook and Reddit are among the most frequently cited sources across all queries.
