Claude Attracts Affluent Customers in the United States
A recent survey conducted by Epoch AI and Ipsos has highlighted a notable trend: users of the AI assistant Claude in the United States predominantly come from high-income households. In fact, 80% of these users live in households earning more than $100,000 per year. This figure significantly surpasses those of other competing AI services.
Comparison with Other AI Assistants
The survey results show that Microsoft Copilot follows with 64% of its users in the same income bracket. ChatGPT, Grok, and Google Gemini each report 56% of users from households earning over $100,000. In contrast, Meta AI stands out with a significantly lower proportion, with only 37%.
Limited Reach Despite a Wealthy Base
Despite this affluent user base, Claude does not dominate the high-income market in terms of market share. ChatGPT leads with 37% of high-income users, followed by Google Gemini with 24% and Microsoft Copilot with 14%. Claude, on the other hand, captures only 6% of this population. Additionally, 44% of high-income individuals do not use any AI assistant.
Potential Economic Consequences
The data from this survey, conducted over three waves between March and April 2026, should be viewed in light of a study by Anthropic. The latter suggests that more advanced AI models enable better price negotiations, which could exacerbate economic inequalities if wealthier users continue to favor these advanced technologies.
