GM and Google Team Up for Smarter Driving
General Motors recently announced a major update that will affect 4 million vehicles. This update will integrate Gemini, a family of generative AI models developed by Google, into the infotainment systems of the cars. The rollout of this technology will take place over several months and will impact GM's four main brands: Chevrolet, GMC, Buick, and Cadillac. The affected vehicles must be models from the 2022 year or newer and already equipped with Google built-in.
Google built-in: An Integrated Platform
The Google built-in system operates similarly to a smartphone, offering services like Google Maps, Google Assistant, and access to the Google Play Store directly from the vehicle's dashboard. It is important to note that this system must be factory-installed and cannot be added after the vehicle purchase.
Gemini: Advanced Features for Drivers
With the integration of Gemini, GM promises a more economical and interactive driving experience. One of Gemini's features is to plan a route that consumes the least amount of fuel possible. This feature could help drivers save on fuel, which continues to rise in price in the United States.
In addition to these practical features, Gemini allows drivers to locate services such as the nearest drive-in coffee shop or post office. It can also read incoming messages and dictate responses, as well as find podcasts and create music playlists.
Entertainment and Natural Interaction
To enjoy entertainment options, users will need to have apps like Netflix, Hulu, Prime Video, YouTube, Spotify, or Amazon Music installed via the Google Play Store. GM emphasizes that interaction with Gemini will be natural and interactive, without requiring specific commands.
Update and Terms of Use
In the coming months, GM customers will receive a message on their vehicle's infotainment screen indicating that it is ready for the upgrade to Gemini from the current Google Assistant. To benefit from this update, customers must be connected to OnStar, be connected to the Google Play Store, use American English as their language, and agree to switch to Gemini.
