An economics professor at Brown University recently highlighted the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) usage on his students' academic performance. During a take-home exam, the average score reached an impressive 96%, which raised the professor's suspicions about the possible use of AI for cheating.
To verify his suspicions, the professor decided to transform the final exam into an in-person test. The results were striking: the average score plummeted to 48.6%. This transition also resulted in 18 out of the 86 enrolled students dropping the course, and nine others did not show up for the exam.
These observations are corroborated by two major studies, one conducted in China and the other by the University of California, Berkeley. These studies show that when students rely on AI for their assignments, their performance on monitored exams is significantly lower.
These results raise crucial questions about academic integrity and how AI could be used ethically within the educational framework. The stakes are high for institutions that must adapt their assessment methods to ensure a fair and accurate evaluation of students' skills.
