Epic Games Unveils Unreal Engine 6 at the State of Unreal Conference
At the State of Unreal conference held in Chicago, Epic Games unveiled Unreal Engine 6, its latest 3D engine. This new tool marks a significant evolution from its predecessors, focusing on the integration of generative AI. The goal is to attract developers by providing tools that simplify their daily work.
Unreal Engine is recognized as the most popular game engine in the industry, thanks to its performance, initial free access, and ease of use. The sixth version is particularly anticipated, as it will be at the heart of games developed for the upcoming PS6 and Xbox Helix consoles, which are expected to launch no earlier than 2028. Unreal Engine 6 promises not only improved graphics but also simplified portability and a unification of versions for developers. Epic Games plans to merge the two main development tracks of Unreal Engine, namely UE 5 and the Unreal Editor for Fortnite, into a single product: Unreal Engine 6.
A Technological Revolution Through AI
Epic Games is not merely updating Unreal Engine 5. With Unreal Engine 6, the company aims to transform the industry by integrating generative artificial intelligence technologies. Tools like Claude and Gemini will be incorporated to alleviate repetitive tasks for developers.
The primary objective is to reduce tedious tasks related to content creation, allowing developers to focus more on the creative aspects. Epic Games illustrated the use of AI with several concrete examples: in a modeled environment, Claude can furnish an apartment or design the architecture of a city. For animation, tools like Nano Banana and ChatGPT Images enhance renders with additional details.
AI in Development: A Delicate Question
The integration of AI into Unreal Engine 6 raises sensitive questions within the creative community. AI is perceived by some as a threat to artists' jobs, and its use must be approached with caution. A previous example is Clair-Obscur Expedition 33, which faced criticism for its reliance on generative AI.
Epic Games seeks to reassure by stating that AI is not intended to replace artists but to optimize developers' work. Creators will retain control over assets, with the ability to modify AI-generated elements, as demonstrated in the apartment presentation. However, these promises will need to be validated in practice, and it remains to be seen how developers will adopt this technology.
Unreal Engine 6 is expected to be available in early access by the end of 2027, with an official release planned for 2028.
