Why it matters : Couples need to define their own rules in the face of rapidly expanding technology, without an established social or legal framework.

At the end of August 2026, 50.5% of American adults consider a romantic or sexual relationship with an AI to be infidelity. Respondents familiar with AI companions judge more strictly than others, while the primary stated motivation remains the search for listening and companionship. The law mainly regulates the protection of minors, leaving couples to set their own rules.

Defining Boundaries in Relationships Due to Lack of Established Norms

Public opinion is almost evenly split on the use of the term "infidelity," but a majority believes the topic deserves at least discussion. In the absence of lexical consensus, partners are left to their own judgments. Historically, couples have already negotiated their rules around pornography, exes, dating apps still installed, the boundaries of friendship in a private thread, or proximity to a colleague, without a universal standard but with conventions acquired over time. AI companions, however, have not benefited from such an adjustment period, and what pertains to adult relationships is left to households. About seven out of ten people would set a boundary around intimacy with an AI, even though many households have never tried these tools and the category is experiencing rapid growth. Explicit clauses about AI in couple discussions could become common, but not before many disagreements have occurred.

A Narrow Majority Equates AI Romance with Infidelity

According to a survey conducted by AI Girlfriend Coach among 2,150 American adults on August 26 and 27, 2026, 50.5% believe that a romantic or sexual relationship with an AI can be considered infidelity. The analysis focuses on 1,709 responses after excluding 441 questionnaires for quality control. When asked about their red lines, 33.4% of those using the term believe that any romantic or sexual interaction with an AI crosses the line, while 17.1% only consider it infidelity when an emotional attachment forms. Additionally, 21.2% would not classify this behavior as infidelity but would feel uncomfortable if their partner engaged in it, bringing the total of respondents setting some form of limit to 71.7%, compared to 28.3% who dismiss the question on the grounds that an AI is not a person.

Familiarity and Openness to Feelings Correlate with Increased Severity

Among respondents who say they are open to the idea of developing genuine feelings for an AI, 73.0% believe that a romance with an AI can constitute infidelity, compared to 41.2% among those who dismiss this possibility, a gap of about thirty-two points. The same pattern appears with usage experience: 80.6% of current users and 60.2% of former users speak of infidelity, compared to 44.0% of those who have never tried. Furthermore, engaged or married individuals report having used an AI companion app more often than singles, at 30.7% versus 16.3%. Participants were also asked about the possibility of developing genuine feelings for an AI and the factors that attract them to these companions.

Loneliness Dominates the Reasons for Using an AI Companion

When asked about the main reason for potentially using an AI companion, 56.6% cite the need to have someone to talk to or to feel less lonely. Only 10.3% choose affection, romance, or sex, and loneliness emerges as the primary motivation in every measured subgroup. These responses are part of the same questionnaire where participants had to specify how they would perceive the place of such a relationship in their couple.

More Personalized Products than Pornography and Fragmented Legal Framework

Reports indicate that AI companions can flirt, retain memories of recent exchanges, and maintain relationships over several months, to the point that users say they experience grief when a model is withdrawn. Unlike pornography or fictional characters, these tools respond to the person using them, and the relationship is built through interaction. Traditional markers of infidelity rely on the presence of a third party, which AI eliminates while leaving behind secrecy, attachment, sexual content, and a degree of attention beyond the partner's reach. Relationship studies consider emotional infidelity to be harmful, and AI companions resemble this while producing traces that evoke sexual infidelity. On the regulatory front, China enacted rules targeting anthropomorphic AI services on July 15, 2026. California already has laws regarding companion chatbots, and New York adopted additional texts in 2026, most of these frameworks primarily focusing on minors, transparency, and crisis management.
