A teenager was airlifted from a wall on Crown Mountain after following a route found via a chatbot. Rescue teams remind us that AI models do not read the terrain, and the young hiker promises to abandon these tools for planning.
Rescuers Warn: AI Does Not Replace Terrain or Experience
Paul Markey, head of the rescue team, explains that Claude has no real knowledge of the locations or terrain and believes that AI cannot replace experience and common sense on a trail. Bryce Vincent Gowryluk, the rescued teenager, states that he will continue to climb but will no longer use AI to plan his routes, while clarifying that he does not hold Claude responsible and takes ownership of his choices. Anthropic did not respond to a request for comment.
Phone Location, Reminder, and Airlift
After Bryce contacted the police, North Shore Rescue was alerted. Rescuers pinpointed the location of his mobile phone, and then a helicopter dropped off two rescuers above where he was located. One team member rappelled down to Bryce and accompanied him to an area where the helicopter could hoist him aboard. Bryce was stranded on a ledge about five feet wide.
A Path Found with Claude Leads to Widowmaker Arete
In an effort to reach the summit of Crown Mountain, 16-year-old Bryce Vincent Gowryluk sought the help of Claude, the chatbot developed by Anthropic, to identify a new route. He ended up on the "Widowmaker Arete," a steep wall that requires climbing gear, according to the New York Times. He also indicated that he had used Google Maps and AllTrails when preparing for his hike.
