Vera Health Raises $32M for Its AI Medical Engine

The start-up Vera Health, founded by French entrepreneurs Maxime Allouch and Taieb Bennani in San Francisco, has closed a Series A funding round of $32 million. The company claims hundreds of thousands of users and highlights a medical search engine that explicitly qualifies the level of uncertainty of its sources.
Claimed Uses and Displayed Uncertainty
According to Vera Health, its medical search engine is used for free by over 700,000 healthcare professionals in 190 countries, including 50,000 in France. The company states that in January, it had virtually no users in Europe. Maxime Allouch explains that AI should not give the impression that it knows everything and that it is better to show uncertainty than to provide an overly confident answer. The service associates a color code with publications and displays red when the evidence is deemed insufficient, in order to signal the variable strength of the data.
Funding: $32 Million Led by Threshold Ventures
The company announces a Series A funding round of $32 million led by Threshold Ventures. Optum Ventures, Mantis VC, and SV Angel are participating in the operation, while Y Combinator and Gradient are increasing their investment. Among its supporters are Y Combinator and Google’s AI fund, Gradient, launched in 2017. Optum Ventures is linked to UnitedHealth Group.
What the Engine Does: Classifying and Citing Over 60 Million Sources
Vera Health's engine allows for the quick finding, evaluation, and citation of scientific data to answer healthcare providers' questions. It leverages a database of over 60 million publications, recommendations, consensus conferences, and drug notices. Each study is ranked according to the methodology used, the level of evidence on the Oxford scale, sample size, publication date, originating journal, and number of citations.

Medical Context and Product Positioning
Approximately one medical article is published every 20 seconds, making it impossible for a doctor to keep up with all new publications. Taieb Bennani believes it is necessary to show when a claim is based on few cases rather than a large clinical trial. He emphasizes that doctors make quick decisions in the face of massive data volumes and that the tool must provide them, at the right moment, with the best of medical knowledge.
Roadmap and Organization
The company's team consists of about a dozen people. They plan to allocate the funds to enrich their knowledge base, better adapt to the specifics of each country, and develop new partnerships with scientific institutions and healthcare facilities. Taieb Bennani aims to reduce the gap between medical knowledge and what each patient receives to just a few seconds. Vera Health was launched in the summer of 2024 and joined Y Combinator from the start, allowing it to quickly confront its product with the market.
An Identified Competitor: Juisci and Its Platform-Inspired Approach
In the same segment, Juisci draws inspiration from the codes of Netflix and Spotify to broaden access to scientific literature. This company targets healthcare institutions as well as industrial players, including Sanofi, Air Liquide, and L’Oréal.
