Meta Bets on AI to Verify User Age
To better control access for young users, Meta has introduced a new age verification method that relies on morphological analysis through artificial intelligence. This technology aims to prevent minors from bypassing age restrictions on Instagram and Facebook.
Verification is no longer limited to user declarations. Now, an AI visually analyzes photos and videos to detect physical cues such as body proportions, height, and bone structure. Unlike facial recognition, this approach does not seek to identify individuals but rather to estimate their age range. The goal is to identify accounts created by children under 13 years old.
A Combined Approach for Greater Accuracy
Meta's morphological analysis tool does not operate in isolation. It is complemented by textual analysis of posts, bios, and comments to detect age indicators. Mentions of school or birthdays can trigger alerts. In the future, Meta plans to extend this monitoring to popular formats like Reels and live videos.
In cases of doubt regarding age, the account is suspended, and the user must provide proof of age. Without this proof, the account is permanently deleted.
Enhanced Measures for Teenagers
Meta is not just verifying age. The platform has also implemented security measures for users aged 13 to 15 years, who are automatically placed in a more secure environment. These measures include private accounts by default, limited messaging, and filtering of sensitive content.
This system is being gradually rolled out in several regions, including Europe and Brazil, and is beginning to be adopted in the United States. Parents can now gain insight into their children's interactions with artificial intelligence.
A Delicate Balance Between Safety and Privacy
Meta faces increasing pressure to protect minors while navigating a complex legal landscape. Authorities are investigating and imposing financial penalties, pushing Meta to demonstrate its efforts in age verification. However, morphological analysis raises questions about accuracy and the protection of personal data. Estimating age based on morphology is not infallible, and errors could have significant consequences.
