However, a recent study conducted by two researchers from the University of Berkeley challenges this optimistic view. After eight months of observation in an American tech company, the results show that AI could actually intensify employees' workload.

A Revealing Study

The researchers employed a methodical approach, combining field observations, analysis of internal communications, and over 40 in-depth interviews. Their conclusion is clear: AI, far from reducing the workload, seems to amplify it through various mechanisms.

Three Identified Mechanisms

Task Expansion: AI fills skill gaps, prompting employees to take on additional responsibilities. This broadens the scope of their roles without any formal decision being made.

Dissolution of Boundaries: AI facilitates access to tasks at any time, blurring the lines between professional and personal life. The conversational style of AI models reinforces this trend, encouraging continuous use.

Permanent Multitasking: AI allows for the management of multiple tasks simultaneously, but this increases pressure on employees. Study participants expressed a heightened sense of stress, despite the initial goal of relief.

Towards a Regulated Use of AI

To prevent AI from becoming a trap, the researchers recommend that companies establish clear standards. This includes introducing intentional breaks to avoid hasty decisions, sequencing work into coherent phases, and preserving spaces for human dialogue.

Bernie Sanders, a figure in the American Democratic Party, has proposed a four-day workweek as a possible solution, although this idea remains largely ignored. Companies are therefore encouraged to consider strategies to regulate the use of AI and protect the well-being of their employees.
