Walmart Launches Portal for AI Agents and Regulates Their Purchases

Walmart launches an MCP-based Agent Gateway server to allow approved AI agents to explore its inventory and make purchases on behalf of customers. The retailer is adding Agent Profiles, expected next month, which will include transaction validation and spending limits. Special conditions prohibit access to payment data and confirm the application of returns, even in the case of a failing agent. This strategy sets itself apart from Amazon, which now blocks purchases made by agents.
Walmart sets rules and ensures return enforcement
Walmart is introducing special conditions to regulate the activities of AI agents on its site, defining their rights and methods of intervention. The retailer specifies that its return policy remains applicable, even when the agent does not act as intended. According to the company, an agent cannot perform actions beyond the intent expressed by the buyer, does not have access to payment information, and can only view the data necessary for the task. Agents who do not comply with these rules will be blocked. Walmart adds that the Agent Gateway should allow for the purchase of usual items without sharing personal information or purchase history directly with the agent.
Agent Profiles to separate, limit, and approve purchases
The Agent Profiles, expected next month, will give each AI agent a dedicated profile within the customer's account. Purchases made by the agent will be visible separately from those of the account holder. Customers will be able to impose approval for each transaction or authorize operations within a limit they define, a system compared by Walmart to adding an authorized user on a credit card. The creation of a profile will occur during the first use of an agent via the Agent Gateway, after authorization and linking to the account, with configuration of controls and limits. The profile can be deleted at any time. Support for agents is open to all Walmart account holders, without a Walmart+ subscription.

An MCP-based Gateway to connect approved agents
Walmart's Agent Gateway system uses an MCP server, which allows the connection of approved agents through the context protocol. Originally developed by Anthropic, MCP aims to connect artificial intelligence agents to tools, workflows, and external data sources. In this context, an agent can consult Walmart's online inventory and execute purchases for the user. The retailer is already relying on integrations with ChatGPT, Gemini, and other AI applications, and had announced a partnership with Meta's Muse.
A focus on agency, while others close the door
While Amazon has begun blocking purchases made by AI agents and other sites, particularly in travel and booking, are excluding them, Walmart is taking the opposite approach. John Furner explained that the company is deploying more technologies for a future where these agents will be commonplace, a statement made at the Masters of Scale Summit in San Francisco. The technology is intended to support agency-driven purchases for Walmart and Sam’s Club. The launch of the Agent Gateway has been officially announced, accompanied by tools to distinguish purchases initiated by an agent and to strengthen controls left to customers.
