Waze Integrates Gemini to Revolutionize Navigation with AI

Waze is undergoing a transformation with the integration of Gemini, Google's flagship AI assistant, into the navigation app. The goal is to allow users to further customize their routes.

Among the four new updates, only two are directly related to Gemini. Waze announces an update to its conversational reporting feature, initially introduced in 2024, allowing drivers to use voice commands to report traffic incidents and suggest map updates, such as a road closure or an outdated house number. Additionally, Waze has launched the Destination Search feature, which enables drivers to once again use voice commands to find a destination (for example, “Find me an open café right now” or “Find me a nearby gas station with the lowest prices”).

Waze also allows users to adjust voice prompts to be “less chatty,” so that drivers are not distracted from their music or podcasts while using the app's driving instructions.

A new Motorcycle Mode will also be available, incorporating shortcuts for two-wheelers and more accurate ETAs (estimated time of arrival) for better routing.

Finally, Waze will now offer routes based on users' past trips and its own data on local traffic patterns. So, if you prefer highways over local roads, Waze will ensure that these routing options appear first.

So far, Google has avoided giving Waze a complete AI-powered overhaul. In contrast, Google Maps has seen its AI capabilities increasingly expand, as the tech giant seems to exert greater control over its flagship navigation tool.
