Webtoon Deploys AI Tools for Localization on Canvas
Webtoon, the online comic platform, is preparing to integrate AI-based localization tools on Canvas, its dedicated space for creators. This initiative aims to help artists increase their revenue and spread their art to a wider audience.
New Features for Global Reach
Webtoon recently announced the introduction of several innovative features on Canvas. These tools are designed to facilitate access to an international audience and enhance the understanding of reader engagement. Manga creators publishing on Canvas will soon be able to use an AI translation tool to adapt their works into multiple languages, including English, Spanish, French, Indonesian, Thai, Traditional Chinese, and German. A beta version of this tool will initially be available to English-speaking users of Canvas starting in the spring, before expanding to other markets over the summer.
Enhanced Analytics and Management Tools
In addition to the translation tool, Webtoon will update the Canvas dashboard to provide more detailed analytics on series performance. Creators will benefit from a deeper understanding of readership and new tools to manage their community engagement. Furthermore, Webtoon plans to expand its advertising revenue-sharing program to all creators publishing in one of the languages supported by Canvas.
Increased Support for Creators
Yongsoo Kim, president of Webtoon, explained that these innovations aim to help creators grow their audience, build fandoms, and increase their revenue. He emphasized that Webtoon’s primary goal is to enable creators to overcome the barriers posed by traditional distribution channels. Kim described the new translation feature on Canvas as a tool designed to simplify creators' lives.
Overcoming Language Barriers
Kim stated that language barriers and distribution challenges have long limited creators' reach. With these new tools, Webtoon hopes to assist creators in reaching readers worldwide while maintaining complete creative control over their work.
Comparison with Kindle Translate
The Canvas AI tool bears similarities to Kindle Translate, launched by Amazon last fall. In response to a question about how the translation tool works, Kim clarified that it relies on a combination of Webtoon’s proprietary language model and a powerful external language model. He also noted that the program only processes the textual elements of a manga page and that no content is stored or used to further train the language model.
Maintaining Translation Consistency
Localization is not just about simple text translation. The AI tool includes a glossary section that creators can fill with information about their series, which helps maintain translation consistency and understand the narrative context. "The model will have relatively less context for titles that have just started and have only a few episodes published on the platform," Kim explained. "But once a creator begins translating their episodes and publishing more, the model will develop cumulative context on the title, and the overall quality of the AI-generated translations will improve."
Verification and Quality Assurance
Given that AI models can make mistakes, creators are encouraged to verify their translations for potential inaccuracies. Kim mentioned that if errors are detected by creators or readers, they can submit reports to Webtoon’s quality assurance team, triggering a human review process.
An Optional Tool for Creators
In response to a question about the possibility that the use of AI might deter some readers, Kim emphasized that the translation tool is entirely optional. Translated versions of a series will be removed from the platform if a creator chooses not to participate.
The Future of AI at Webtoon
"At Webtoon, we firmly believe that this type of technology should only be used to assist our creators, not to replace them," Kim stated. "We are starting with the translation program, but we are still considering the types of AI-based support and other technologies that will truly enhance our creators' daily lives."
