Weflayr Raises $2.5M to Route AI Models in Business

Former Mangopay CEO Romain Mazeries launches Weflayr, a platform that directs each request to the most suitable AI model to optimize costs. The startup announces $2.5 million in pre-seed funding, led by 13books Capital, with participation from Founders Future and Station F Venture.
Stripe Acquires OpenRouter, a Market Comparison Valued at $7.5 Billion
Weflayr enters a segment where OpenRouter, an American AI model routing platform, was acquired by Stripe last summer. Stripe has not disclosed the amount, but the New York Times estimates the deal at $7.5 billion. Weflayr positions itself in the same market, where hundreds of AI models accessible to businesses coexist, with varying performance and pricing.
A Gateway That Tests and Routes to the Most Relevant Model
The platform acts as an intermediary between business applications and AI models, practicing routing, which means directing each request to the model deemed most relevant. Before any integration, Weflayr evaluates several models based on its clients' specific data and selects those that best meet their expectations. This allows for a simple request to be sent to a less expensive model without impacting quality, with the explicit goal of reducing AI-related costs while maintaining relevance. For an initial implementation, the company reports having reduced expenses by over 55% while maintaining the same level of quality. This approach aims to solve a complex choice for businesses faced with a multitude of offerings.

Founders and $2.5 Million Pre-Seed Round
The project is led by Romain Mazeries, former CEO of Mangopay, alongside Noé Achache, former head of AI engineering at Theodo Data & AI, a company specializing in data and AI support. Weflayr announces a $2.5 million pre-seed round led by 13books Capital, with participation from Founders Future, Kima Ventures, Plug and Play, and Station F Venture. Founders Future is the fund of Marc Menasé. Roxanne Varza, director of Station F, also joins the round alongside business angels. The startup is incubated at Station F in the F/AI program.
Strengthening R&D, Accelerating the Platform, and Targeting Europe and the United States
The $2.5 million funding will finance the strengthening of engineering and AI research teams, accelerate platform development, and deploy a commercial strategy in Europe and the United States. Romain Mazeries draws a parallel with the payment industry, which has adopted highly sophisticated routing systems over the past fifteen years, and believes that AI is following the same trajectory at a faster pace. He suggests that AI creators are seeking more control and precision in their routing decisions, which Weflayr aims to address.
