WhatsApp Business: Meta Entrusts Setup to AI Agents

Meta is introducing a dedicated MCP server for WhatsApp Business to delegate configuration and part of the management to AI agents like Claude or ChatGPT. Developers can describe actions via chat, instead of navigating through multiple tools. This approach is part of the family of MCP servers already deployed by Meta and coexists with other similar offerings in the industry.
Testing, Webhooks, and Automated Checks During Onboarding
Companies can test messages and webhooks through the AI agent. It also monitors points that may fail without alert, such as Terms of Service, payment methods, and Business Verification. Supported operations include creating a WhatsApp Business account, adding and verifying the phone number, signing up for access to the Cloud API, and verifying the Terms of Service.
Chat-Based Configuration with an MCP-Compatible AI Agent
Configuration is done by conversing with an AI agent and describing the actions to be performed. This interaction relies on WhatsApp Business MCP, an MCP server that connects an AI coding agent to the platform. Agents like Claude, Cursor, Codex, or ChatGPT are compatible. Beyond onboarding, the AI can create message templates from a description or modify existing templates, while handling most repetitive tasks.

Fewer Tools for Developers to Manage
Previously, setup involved multiple interfaces and references, including the Developer Console, Meta's Business Manager, API documentation, and the editor. AI agent automation eliminates these back-and-forths to deploy WhatsApp Business messaging, the service that connects a business with its customers on WhatsApp.
A Dedicated MCP Server and a Well-Established Ecosystem
Meta is expanding its range of MCP servers by adding a component specifically designed to assist with integration with WhatsApp, alongside those intended for advertising and application configurations. Other players like PayPal, Stripe, GitHub, Notion, Slack, Salesforce, Atlassian, X, Google, and Microsoft also offer MCP servers for secure interactions with AI agents. Meta further indicates that its Meta Social Technologies MCP server can discover API endpoints, facilitate documentation searches, and assist with troubleshooting during configuration.
